Nelson and Time Trials

The third edition of Spalding Cycling Club’s Nelson Sportive on 28 April had a record field of over 100 riders, including 26 from the club, to tackle a choice of 2 rolling and scenic rides of 58 and 80 miles in and around Norfolk.  Starting and finishing at Sutton Bridge’s Curlew Centre the routes took in some quiet villages, Sandringham Park and on up to Brancaster on the long route.  The feed station at Snettisham proved popular probably because it was the Rose and Crown Pub!  In contrast to last year when riders faced heavy rain and snow this year the weather was kind – cool and dry but a rising head and cross wind challenged the riders in the final miles. Thanks go to organiser Simon Wright and the support team on the day who provided refreshments, marshalling, roadside maintenance and also to Sue and Florian from Active Edge Solutions for the post event massage service.

The fine warm evening on Tuesday encouraged 30 club members and 3 guest riders to take the start in the fourth race of the 10 mile league time trial, with no fewer than 9 riders posting PB’s on the night.  Fastest on the night was Neil Palmer, continuing his winning series of rides in 22:45 just a few seconds faster than the previous week, Chris Ward took second overall in 23.15 an almost identical time to Race 3.  Completing the top 3 Chris Pratt finished in 24 minutes exactly.

Aimee Stocker was first lady with 26:15.  In the Under 18’s competition Sam Bentley managed to take top spot from Harry Bellars by 7 seconds finishing in times of 24:21 and 24:28 respectively and PB’s for each.  Jake Norton was fastest in the Under 16’s with 28:07 – believed to be a PB.  Other PB’s on the night were:  Andy Bowser 28:50, Paul Kendall 30:33, Ross McGivern 31:36, Michael Farrell 32:21, William Gurney 37:24 and Nicole Flatters 38:50.
